DST vs PES vs JEF — Which Embroidery Format Should You Use?

If you work with embroidery, you've probably come across a confusing array of file formats — DST, PES, JEF, VP3, EXP and more. Choosing the wrong format can mean your design won't load on your machine. This guide explains every major embroidery format and exactly when to use each one.

DST — The Universal Standard

DST (Data Stitch Tajima) is the most widely supported embroidery file format in the world. Created by Tajima, it has become the industry standard for commercial embroidery production.

• Works on Tajima, Barudan, ZSK, Brother commercial, Melco and most others
• No color information stored — you manually set thread colors on the machine
• Smaller file size — faster to transfer
• Best choice for commercial production and shops with multiple machine brands

PES — Best for Brother & Babylock

PES is the native format for Brother and Babylock embroidery machines. It stores color information, making it easier to set up designs without a separate color chart.

• Stores thread color data — colors display on machine screen
• Multiple versions (PES v1 through v10) — make sure your machine supports the version
• Works on Brother PE, SE, PR series and Babylock machines
• Also compatible with some Bernina machines

JEF — For Janome Machines

JEF is the native format for Janome embroidery machines. Like PES, it stores color information. If you use a Janome machine, request JEF files for the best compatibility.

VP3 — For Pfaff & Husqvarna Viking

VP3 is used by Pfaff and newer Husqvarna Viking machines. It supports color information and is required for machines in the SVP Worldwide family.
